The spread is wide because "Squarespace designer" covers four different jobs, from someone applying a template over a weekend to a studio running brand strategy for two months. Price follows scope, not page count. Marta Lebre, a Squarespace designer who publishes a detailed tier breakdown, puts it well: you are not comparing different prices for the same thing, you are comparing different services that happen to end in a Squarespace website. Other designers publish numbers that sit inside those bands. How much do Squarespace designers charge per hour?
Most Squarespace designers charge $75 to $150 an hour for work on an existing site, and $50 to $100 for simple customization. Specialists who handle code injection, SEO or integrations charge $150 to $200, and agencies $200 to $250. Some designers sell a "VIP day" instead, a fixed day of focused work, published at $400 to $1,600 a day.
Hourly billing makes sense for a contained job: fixing a broken layout, adding a booking page, cleaning up mobile spacing. It is a poor way to buy a whole site, because the hours are hard to estimate and almost always run long on the same step, which is waiting for your content.
What is included in a Squarespace web design package?
A typical package includes the design, the page build, mobile adjustments, connecting your domain, basic on-page SEO settings, a launch, and a short training session so you can edit the site afterward. What it usually does not include is where budgets go wrong:
- Copywriting. Paige Brunton states plainly that her published figures are for the website build only, excluding branding and copywriting. Most designers expect you to send the words.
- Branding. A logo, colors and fonts are a separate project with its own quote, and Paige Brunton excludes branding from her figures too.
- Photography. Stock images are usually included. A real shoot is not.
- The Squarespace plan. You pay Squarespace directly, every year, for as long as the site exists.
- Changes after launch. Once the project closes, updates are billed hourly or through a maintenance retainer.
The copy is the line to watch. A five page site needs somewhere around 2,500 to 4,000 words written about your business, and if the designer is waiting on you for them, the project clock stops. That is the most common reason a two week build takes two months.
How long does it take a Squarespace designer to build a website?
Two to six weeks for most small business sites, once the designer has your content. Designers who work in focused sprints publish two week project timelines. Studios with a strategy phase take four to eight weeks. The honest answer for most buyers is that the timeline depends on how quickly you deliver text, photos and feedback, because the design work itself is the fast part.

The designer fee is paid once. The platform is paid every year. On prices read from squarespace.com, the four plans are $19, $29, $49 and $99 a month billed annually, or $25, $39, $65 and $139 month to month. Is it worth paying a Squarespace designer?
It is worth it when design is the thing that will win you business. A photographer, an interior designer, a boutique hotel or a restaurant sells on how the site looks, and a good Squarespace designer earns their fee there. It is also worth it if you want a person to argue with you about positioning, and you have the budget for the strategic tier.
It is harder to justify when your site is mostly there to explain services and get a phone call. A plumber, an accountant or a consulting practice needs clear pages that answer the questions buyers ask, and a $7,000 design fee buys a nicer frame around words you still have to write. For those businesses, the thing that stalls the website is almost never the design.

If you do hire, and for a design-led business you should, these questions separate a clean project from an expensive one:
- Who writes the copy, and is it in the price? Get this in writing. If it is you, ask for a page by page word count so you know the job.
- How many revision rounds are included? Two is common. The third is usually billed.
- Is the Squarespace account in my name? It should be, with your card on it, so the site is yours if the relationship ends.
- What does a change cost after launch? Ask for the hourly rate or the retainer price before you sign.
- Can I see three live sites you built for businesses like mine? A portfolio of mockups tells you less than live sites that are still running.
