The first is a small business owner who does not want to write a $3,000 to $8,000 check for a website and would rather pay for it like a phone plan: a fixed amount every month, the site built for them, changes handled when they ask. The second is a marketing team or agency that needs design work every week and wants a designer on retainer without hiring one. Both are called a design subscription. If you run a plumbing company, a salon, a practice or a small agency, the second group is not for you, and nothing on those pages is dishonest about that. Unlimited design subscriptions exist for businesses that generate a queue of work: landing pages, ad creative, pitch decks, product screens. A website is one large request in that queue, and Webtemple says so directly in its own FAQ, where building an entire website counts as a complex task. You would be paying $3,500 or more a month for a pipeline you use once.

The first group is the real comparison for most buyers, and the question that decides it is not the monthly price. It is what happens at the edges of the contract. Three things are worth reading before you sign anything in this market. How long is the minimum term, and what does leaving early cost? What counts as an edit, and how many do you get? And what do you actually walk away with when you stop paying? A pay monthly website that looks cheap at $99 can be the most expensive option you have if the term is 24 months, edits are rationed to four small tickets, and the site is a WordPress install on the vendor server that you cannot take with you.
